image for Other Mother's Day for transgendered fathers on Father's Day
Happy Other Mother's Day you Psychedelic Queen

Traditionally on Father's Day, there is one subset of Father's who do not joyfully open up a card that tells them that for one day they can be the boss before handing the title back to their wife, nor do they get a little present of beer, beans or beef. They get nothing.

These are the transgendered fathers, those who have children but have moved to the other side of the bus, taken a detour down life's highway and removed their fatherhood machinery.

Finally, they are to be recognised by incorporating 'Other Mother's Day' into Father's Day.

"There's always been an Other Mother's Day," said Clint Honne, owner of The Card Supermarket in Bradford. "In Bradford it's celebrated in July, to recognise those people who are like a second mother to kids who already have a mother, or who just happened to have married their father but aren't particularly pleasant. Only Snow White seems to buy cards for that reason."

After a successful ePetition to Downing Street that collected five thousand signatures, mostly from people who thought they were signing up to a new public holiday, Other Mother's Day is a recognised event, along side National Sausage Day and Skydiving Appreciation Day. In order to make transgendered fathers feel like any other father, the day has been set to coincide with Father's Day itself.

"We felt it was thoughtful," said Honne. "Now fathers who have become mothers can get a card just like their fruitful brethren."

The biggest problem now facing the card industry is what name they will come up with for fathers who are now mothers.

"We thought of amalgamating the words father and mother, and came up with 'mather' because 'mother' was already taken," said Honne. "For 'mum' and 'dad' it was more problematic. 'Mad'? 'Mud'? 'Mod'? 'Dam'? In the end, we settled on 'Dud'."
